Michael Brooks talking with Founders Financial Member Partners at the 2023 Founders Financial National Leadership Conferenceby Founders Financial —Leadership can take many forms. Some leaders inspire and guide their followers with a clear vision, while others may unintentionally create a negative atmosphere by projecting their own doubts and insecurities onto those they lead.

So what separates the two?

Can it be boiled down to a knowledge gap? Are the best leaders simply the most knowledgeable in comparison to their peers? Or maybe it’s how that knowledge is applied, focusing less on the “what” and more on the “why” and the “how”?

The answer? It’s not so black and white.

Leadership is a continuous journey of growth and understanding that goes beyond technical skills. It requires a deep commitment to serving others and the wisdom to apply knowledge in alignment with one’s purpose and values. Let’s explore the significance of seeking wisdom, the attributes of a wise leader, and the impact of values in the pursuit of true leadership.

The Relationship Between Knowledge and Wisdom

There is no discounting the importance of knowledge and the need to be knowledgable when guiding yourself and leading others. Information gathered from diverse audiences and communities serve as essential building blocks in our ability to nurture and support others. However, knowledge alone isn’t enough. Great leadership is often accompanied by wisdom — something more than just knowledge alone. Wisdom is the integration of experiences and accumulated knowledge that come together with one’s core values, leading to intentional actions that serve others. As servant leaders, we must remain open-minded, explore diverse perspectives, and make decisions that prioritize the greater good – even if we don’t have all of the answers ourselves. By doing so, we take in the knowledge and shared experiences that drives wisdom and empowers us to enrich others through our leadership.

Wisdom Maneuvers Us to Reach Our Purpose

Simply put, purpose motivates us and represents the end goal we are continually striving for. Wisdom is what helps us make wise choices to stay on the right path towards that purpose. This means recognizing what is right and wrong, making fair decisions, and staying true to our values to arrive at our desired destination.

To use a metaphor: one’s purpose is both the fuel and the finish line, one’s knowledge is the ability to participate on the racetrack, and one’s wisdom is the ability to maneuver oneself to reach that finish line without tripping others during the race – by accident or otherwise.

Concepts in Action

In order to build your identity as a strong leader, ask yourself the following questions for each category on a regular basis, in order of priority:

Wisdom

  • At my core, what values will I never compromise on?
  • How often do I apply those values to my actions?
  • Has there been a time where I have compromised my values? If so, what were the circumstances, and what can I learn from this experience?

Purpose

  • What goal am I pursuing?
  • Have my recent actions served my purpose?
  • Do those actions reflect my values?

Knowledge

  • Do I dedicate enough time to learn and grow, both professionally and personally?
  • What have I learned recently that has contributed to the pursuit of my goals?

Continually Take Action

The pursuit of wisdom is not a destination but an ongoing process of self-reflection and growth. It requires a steadfast commitment to aligning our knowledge with our values, acting in accordance with our purpose, and positively impacting the lives of others.

Living out our values and continually evaluating them through actions is a perpetual journey embodying wisdom. As servant leaders, we must embark on this journey ourselves and pave the way for others to do the same. To the Founders team, wisdom cannot be expressed through words alone but is demonstrated through one’s life’s work and actions.

As we embrace the principles of seeking wisdom and nurturing leadership, we invite you to let your life’s work and actions define your definition of wisdom and leadership. The pursuit of wisdom, when grounded in servant leadership, can become a powerful catalyst for meaningful change. Your legacy starts there.
